Winter's Grasp on Cape Cod

My photographs focus on the coastal tourist area of Cape Cod, Massachusetts during the off-season. Winter is when popular tourist destinations transform, and show the reality of year-round living in seasonally dependent places. A lack of greenery, people, and warm sunshine exacerbates economic divides and makes environmental strain more visible. These photographs highlight the abnormal within otherwise familiar spaces.

I photograph coastal landscapes and urban spaces as they shift and function in meaning during the winter. These images reflect a tension between the idealized version of Cape Cod and the conditions that sustain it. Signs of wealth and vacancy sit alongside evidence of limited access and environmental decay, suggesting a landscape shaped unevenly by seasonal demand.

My perspective is informed by returning to places I only used to experience in the summer months. Photographing them in this opposite season has changed how I understand and see them. This work considers how a location can hold multiple identities at once, and it piques my interest because it allows me to focus on the version of Cape Cod that reflects year-round life, and the solitude that accompanies it.
